Overview

Journey draws the records of the current list as one thick band that you split, step by step, into branches. Each branch is a ribbon whose thickness is the number of records in it, so you can see at a glance where most of the list goes: how many cases are open, of those how many are high priority, and what the people linked to those cases have in common. The path grows to the right as you split it, and the view scrolls to follow it.

Starting the journey

Open a list of records of one entity type (a case list, say) and switch the view to Journey. The list starts as a single band and opens by its first property that groups the records (the first column the Grid shows for that entity with between 2 and 12 different values, and no more values than half the records). If no property groups them, the band stays whole until you split it.

When the list has no records, the view offers to jump to related case-like records instead, opening them straight in the Journey view.

Where you came from

The path starts with how you got to this list: the same steps the journey pane lists (the space you started in, then each page on the way), greyed out until they’re loaded, one column each, leading into the list. Once a step (or a branch it held) has loaded, it takes its colour like any other branch. Earlier steps can hold far more records than the list, so their bands are drawn on a compressed scale.

Filters you apply to the list (from the filter pane or the search box) are steps too, in the order you applied them: the list before its filters (Cases 15), then each filter (Status: Active 7), with the list itself named by its last filter (Priority: High Risk 3). The counts are the same ones the page header shows. With Autostep on, each of those steps opens to show the alternatives to its filter: Cases 15 fans out by Status, with Status: Active carrying on and Resolved, On Hold and the rest beside it.

When a step moved to another entity type (Domains to Leads for Domains), the way on is drawn as a dashed link with a link badge rather than a ribbon - the journey followed links there. Autostep doesn’t open those steps.

Click an earlier step to:

  • Go back to this step - the same as clicking it in the journey pane.
  • Show what else was here - loads what that step held and fans it out, greyed, beside the way you went (which keeps going on to the next step). A step across several entity types (like Entities in Explore) fans out by entity type with each type’s count; a step of one type splits its records by a property. Fold these branches back tidies it away again.

A greyed type branch loads its records when you pick Load these N to split them (up to 1,000); after that it splits like any other branch, and Open these entities lists them. Records from earlier steps can be opened but not selected, and don’t offer Links - they aren’t part of this list’s network. What you open of earlier steps lasts for the visit.

Autostep (on by default, in the action bar) does this for you: once the list has opened, it opens the earlier steps one at a time, starting with the one just before the list, and the view zooms out to make room as the chart grows. Switch it off to open steps only when you click them; the choice is saved with the journey.

Splitting a branch

Click any branch - its bar, its label or the end of its ribbon - to open its menu. Under Next step, pick one:

  • A property (the same fields the Grid shows for that entity, by their usual names). The branch grows one ribbon per value, biggest first, in shades of the branch’s colour. A split can grow up to 1,000 branches; beyond that the smallest values fold into one Other branch. Records with no value go into Not specified. Properties with only one value across the branch aren’t listed - they can’t split it. A long list of properties scrolls.
  • Links. A dashed line leads to every record linked to the branch’s records, split by entity type straight away (people, phone numbers, addresses…). Those branches can be split by their own properties, or follow their own links in turn - as far as the network configured for the Graph view reaches.

A branch takes one next step. Pick another to switch to it, or pick the ticked one to clear it; either way the branches after it are removed (the menu says how many). Merge back on a branch at the end of the path folds it into its parent; Remove these links does the same for a links step.

Point at a branch to see its path, its count and its share of its parent and of the whole list.

Working with the records

Open these entities in a branch’s menu lists the branch’s records in a panel on the right, with a filter box. Click a record to open it. The circle next to it adds it to the page selection, and Select these in the menu adds the whole branch, so the page’s actions (and Select all, which selects the list’s own records) work on what you found. The selection shows in the chart too: the selected share of each branch is marked at the top of its bar, a strand of the same colour follows it along the ribbons, and the label says how many are selected.

Moving around

  • Scroll moves along the path; Shift + scroll moves up and down; Ctrl + scroll (or a pinch) zooms around the pointer. Drag to pan.
  • Start goes back to the start of the path at 100 %; - / + zoom in steps and the percentage resets to 100 %; Overview zooms out to the whole path (you can zoom out a little further than that, for room around it).
  • Labels shows or hides the branch labels. Zoomed far out, small branches drop their labels until there is room.
  • Reset splits goes back to the automatic first split.

Annotations

The Annotate control adds marks on top of the chart - a header, a note (in a choice of colours), an emoji, an icon, or a Hubstream sticker - the same set as the Link Chart. Drag a mark to move it; click it to edit its text, resize it, recolour it or delete it.

A mark can be attached to a branch: it then stays beside that bar as the chart grows, splits and zooms, with a callout line to it. Add a note here in a branch’s menu adds a note already attached; for any other mark, select it, press its link button and click a bar. The broken-link button frees it again. If the branch it was attached to is no longer on the chart (its split was cleared), the mark stays where it was, faded. Marks are saved with the journey.

Visuals

The Visuals control holds the same two choices as the other views:

  • Background - Light, Dark, Light fade, Warm fade or Dark fade.
  • Entity colours - a palette (Tableau by default) given to the entity types in the order the network shows them, the list’s own type first. Entity colours uses each entity’s own colour from its settings. Every branch is a shade of its entity type’s colour.
  • Journey - Keep the journey with a space (on by default). See Saving.

Saving

The journey saves itself as you work - every split, links step, label and visuals choice - with nothing stored on your computer. Each list keeps its own journey (filed under the list’s entity type and its first and last record) for as long as you are on the page; Add as space keeps it with the space, so the space’s page opens with the same journey. Splits are saved by property, so when the records change the journey re-opens the same way with the new counts; a split a list can’t make is skipped.

The journey that led here is kept too. Add as space turns your navigation journey into a single step, so the space’s page has no earlier steps of its own. The Journey view saves the steps you took (and what each had opened) with the space. In the space they are drawn frozen before the list: the step labels start with ❄, the bars have a frost edge and the ribbons are paler, but they keep the palette’s colours. Their counts are as they were when saved and don’t update; the list itself is live. Notes attached to those steps stay attached. Hover a frozen step to see when it was saved. To leave the earlier steps out, turn off Visuals → Journey → Keep the journey with a space.

Configuration

SettingDefaultWhat it does
MaxResultCount (the view’s library row)1000The most records of the list the journey is built from. Beyond it, the journey covers the first N and a banner says so.

Known limitations

  • Single-entity lists only, like the Graph and Link Chart views: a query across several entity types doesn’t offer the Journey view.
  • Links reach as far as the network does. Following links uses the same network as the Graph view, so its depth setting limits how many links steps you can take.
  • Outside a space, a journey lasts for the visit. Leaving the page and coming back starts from the automatic split, unless the journey was saved with a space.
  • Frozen steps are a snapshot. In a space, the steps before the list show the counts from when the journey was saved; they can’t be opened, folded or followed. To explore them live, go back through the journey pane.
