Annotations

Overview

Annotations are the marks you add on top of what a view draws: emoji, stickers, and notes. They’re how you say why something matters, which is the part the data can’t tell anyone by itself.

They belong to the thing you annotate rather than sitting in a layer over it. Save the report or view and the annotations come back with it.

What you can add

Emoji

Drop an emoji anywhere. It’s the quickest way to flag something worth a second look, and it needs no explaining.

Stickers

Pull in stickers from the library in HubstreamStickers. These are the same stickers the StickerBook Tile draws, so a flag you’ve defined once means the same thing everywhere it appears.

Notes and comments

Short written text, in whatever color suits. This is where the sentence goes — the one that explains what a chart shows, or why a date matters.

The two are close cousins that display differently. A comment is attributed to you and carries your username. A note stays with the view itself.

Pins and arrows

On a timeline, you can also pin an item’s card so it stays visible permanently, and draw an arrow to an item to point at it. Both are timeline-only for now.

How annotations are saved

Annotations are written into the same definition as the rest of your changes, so they travel with the work rather than needing saving separately.

In Report, that means:

  • Saving the report as a Space brings its annotations back when you return to it.
  • Exporting to PDF includes them, so whoever reads the PDF sees what you flagged.
  • Resetting clears them, along with everything else in the definition.

Where you can annotate

WhereWhat you can add
ReportEmoji, stickers, and notes
Timeline ViewThe fullest set — emoji as item icons, stickers bound to a moment in time, notes, comments, pins, and arrows
Link Chart ViewHeaders, notes, emoji, icons and stickers, placed on the chart
Journey ViewHeaders, notes, emoji, icons and stickers - free, or attached to a branch with a callout so they follow it as the chart grows

More views are getting the same treatment. Annotating is meant to work the same way wherever it turns up, so what you learn in one place carries over.

One difference worth knowing: on a timeline, a sticker binds to a moment in time, not to an item. Put one on today and it stays on today however you move around.
